Requirements List

We will be making at least 6 blocks in a representative number of techniques. You may choose to make a mini wall hanging in order to learn the techniques, make more of the associated blocks for a larger project, or start the Journey to make the whole quilt!

  1. Decide on your COLOUR theme – it doesn’t have to be a reproduction quilt; e.g. Amish or blue-and-white versions would look beautiful.
  2. Decide on your BACKGROUND. Jane used calico throughout. The tutor used a different background in each. Again, it is your choice, but if you want the same fabric throughout the entire quilt allow 5 metres. If only making a few blocks, bring sizeable scraps (fat 1/8th or larger). You will need some 6” squares.
  3. For your other fabrics, again bring a selection of pieces as in 2, including 6” squares.

–          Cotton threads to match colours and background

–          Hand sewing needles – tutor uses appliqué 11s

–          Rotary cutting equipment; 6” square and 6” x 12” rules are most useful

–          Freezer paper if you have it (tutor will bring some)

–          Paper and fabric scissors (small, sharp points)

–          Pins and a fine point pencil

–          Sewing machine – OPTIONAL. This is not necessary and the technique is probably better without.
If you do not intend to bring a sewing machine you might like to do the following preparation, or some of it. It will enable you to get more blocks completed on the day!

1)       Using 2 contrasting fabrics (background plus another) cut 8 squares, 3” size, 4 from each fabric.
Using ¼” seams PRESSED OPEN make 2 Four Patch blocks.

2)      Cut 2 squares,( 1 from background and 1 from a contrast) 6” size.
Cut each on the diagonal TWICE. Rearrange the resulting 8 triangles and stitch 2 blocks, as before.

3)      From each of 2 fabrics cut 3 strips, 3” x 10”
Stitch 3 strips together in combination Dark – Light- Dark
Stitch 3 strips together in combination Light- Dark- Light

–          “Dear Jane” book by Brenda Papadakis, if you have it

–          Sense of humour, your lunch and a mug
