What? |
Taking a traditional block as the pattern we with use thread and stitch to get the design onto the quilt. A great way to make blocks you don’t fancy piecing. You can use the decorative stitches on your machine, free motion quilting or any combination of the two. Wholecloth Requirements ➢ Quilt sandwich. Make the front fabric something either plain or with a very subtle print. Hand dyes fabrics also work well. I suggest you make it between 20” square and 1m square, with a thin wadding in it. Secure the three layers together in your preferred manner. Depending on how fast you work you may want to bring two if you are working with a smaller size. Rectangles can be used but squares are easier. ➢ Threads, a selection of weights, colours and fibers. Try to bring thread that matches your sandwich (front and back) as well as some that contrast. ➢ Sewing machine where the feed dogs can be dropped or covered. This would be a good time to give it a clean and oil, we will be making it work for its living in this class. If you have them bring spare bobbins, this might be a good time to use up those with odd bits of thread on. ➢ A free motion foot, this might be a darning foot, big foot, hopping foot or quilting foot. ➢ Marking tools, chalk pencil, washout pen, vanishing pen. ➢ Needles for the machine. If you have them bring a range of needles, sizes 60 – 100, jeans, quilting and metallic needles may all be useful when playing with different threads. ➢ Small scissors for trimming threads. ➢ Paper, for taking notes and practicing designs ➢ Lunch – and a mug for drinks |
