Workshop Bag with Lynn Quinn

These requirements are for making a small bag approx 6 x 10 inches with lots of individual pockets attached to each other with velcro. Each ‘pocket’ is made the same way, so once you know how to make one, you can make as many as you like in varying sizes. On the day we will have time to make two of the pockets a 3 inch and 5 inch one (with handles). I’ll provide a handout to enable you to complete the bag at home.

All the pockets of my bag are decorated with Seminole bands, but you can use plain fabric if you prefer for the 2, 3 and 4 inch pockets and just decorate the two outer pockets. The sizes are:

Finished pocket: Prepare Seminole panel (or other patchwork):
2 x 10 inches 2 ½ x 9 ½ inches
3 x 10 inches 3 ½ x 9 ½ inches
4 x 10 inches 4 ½ x 9 ½ inches
5 x 10 inches 5 ½ x 9 ½ inches

Note: Sizes include seam allowance and you’ll need two pockets for each size to make the whole bag. The 5 inch size have handles.

Other requirements
¾m (.75 m) fabric for the main body of the bag – a reasonably hard-wearing cotton (dress-weight not furnishing weight) that won’t show the dirt! I used navy blue.
Thread – matching thread for the main bag fabric
Various fabrics for lining the pockets (this shows through the plastic – I used shades of turquoise)
Some thin cotton wadding – just a small amount for the workshop (a fat quarter is plenty)
.5 metre clear shower curtain plastic – available from Fabricland, Hobbycraft, possibly Dunelms. When you buy don’t fold it, roll it to avoid creases. *
Velcro this needs to be the ‘sew both sides’ type (not stick on). You’ll need 2 ½ metres, one inch wide. *
Biro for marking the plastic (not gel pen) and 12 inch ruler
Rotary cutting equipment.
Sewing machine with quarter inch foot (bring walking foot and free-machine feet as well, if you have)
Sewing kit, pins, seam-ripper etc…
