Young Oast

Welcome to the Young Oast Web Page

Young  Oast  members are children or grandchildren of Oast Quilters and at each workshop meeting their relative works with them. We meet three times each year and cover various patchwork and quilting techniques to give a basic instruction for their work. The theme for each session is discussed and decided amongst us all – the  days are fun with the children enjoying the undivided attention of their relative and each other’s company as well as the various cakes and biscuits which appear each time.

We displayed our work at Oast Showcase last year and received very favourable comments. Our main claim to fame is Rachel Hawkins who won first prize at the National Championships in the junior section. The work wasn’t done with us but she is a valued member of our group and we are all very proud of  her.

This year we are working on blocks and looking at appreciation of tonal values and how colour changes mood. Each workshop will be based on a different technique and the end product can be whatever they wish from a small item to a full grown quilt.

They are all talented and bring the freshness of their ideas and opinions. Nobody has yet told them that ‘this colour doesn’t go with that one’ and long may it last. We hope the skills learned at Young Oast and from their relatives will provide them with lasting pleasure throughout their lives.
